The tradition of woodworking is alive and well, and I’m excited to introduce the latest product concept in my lineup, the KlapiCarrier. My goal is to create something practical, long-lasting, and the same time beautiful. KlapiCarrier delivers on that vision. This firewood carrier, crafted from hardwood and featuring traditional joinery techniques, is designed to last a lifetime.
Background of the Prototype
When I began designing the KlapiCarrier, my idea was to create a firewood carrier that not only serves a functional purpose but also looks great beside the fireplace or as part of the home's interior. In Finland, where wood heating is a daily reality, many homeowners seek an elegant solution for firewood handling—something that doesn't disrupt the harmony of the home, but enhances it.
One of the key aspects of this project has been material selection. I chose hardwoods like oak for their durability and beautiful natural patina, and beech for maximum sturdiness. Using traditional woodworking joints means there are no screws or nails that could loosen over time in daily use and which has an impact on overall aesthetics—just carefully crafted, time-tested traditional wood joints that add to the overall aesthetic of the piece and, most importantly, ensures what KlapiCarrier is designed to do: carrying firewood in daily usage for years to come.
The Prototyping Process
Creating this firewood carrier has been a fascinating journey. The image here gives a glimpse into the manufacturing process. At its core is a simple but sturdy frame, designed to carry firewood for years without losing its shape or stability.
In this first prototype, I used a combination of oak, beech, and pine from leftovers and reclaimed wood. Pine is used in prototype to explore how it performs compared to, and with hardwoods. However, the final standard, non-customized product will be made entirely from oak and beech, with a beech base for extra stability, and the rest of the structure in oak for added beauty and strength.
Practicality and Design
The KlapiCarrier is designed to fit perfectly into any home decor, whether modern or traditional. The carrier is spacious enough to hold days' worth of firewood, yet compact enough to carry fully loaded, and to fit neatly beside the fireplace without taking up too much room. Its minimalist design and natural materials make it a timeless piece that complements any home.
Additionally, I am also working on a complementary KlapiCradle - An elegant and sturdy indoor firewood storage solution, which will make storaging firewood into the house easy and aesthetically pleasing. Together, these will form a perfect set for handling and storing firewood in style.

The traditional joinery techniques not only enhance the visual appeal but also make the carrier incredibly durable—it will last for decades without losing its shape or functionality. This aligns with the philosophy behind the product: to create something that withstands use and ages beautifully. It's not a disposable item, but a long-term companion for your fireplace.

This is just the first step in the development of KlapiCarrier. I plan to gather feedback on the prototype and make any necessary improvements for the final version.
